Is It Normal to Be Sore After a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Cascade ChiropracticOctober 2, 20263 min read

Yes. Mild soreness after a chiropractic adjustment is common, especially after the first few visits, and usually fades within 24 to 48 hours. It feels similar to how muscles feel after a new workout. Sharp, severe or worsening pain is not expected and is a reason to call.

Why soreness can happen

Adjustments and mobility work move joints and muscles that may have been stiff or guarded for a while. As those areas start moving again, the surrounding muscles can feel tender, much like after starting a new exercise.

What is normal

  • Mild, achy soreness in the treated area
  • A feeling of looseness or light fatigue
  • Soreness that improves within a day or two

How to feel better faster

  • Keep moving gently. Walking helps more than resting all day.
  • Drink water and get good sleep.
  • Use ice or heat for 15 to 20 minutes, with a layer between the pack and your skin.
  • Try the gentle stretches Dr. Thomas recommends, or browse our stretch library.

Call your chiropractor or doctor if you notice

  • Sharp or severe pain, or pain that keeps getting worse
  • New numbness, tingling or weakness
  • Dizziness, vision changes or a severe headache: seek emergency care
