Sciatica is pain that follows the sciatic nerve from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. Chiropractic care may help by easing pressure and irritation around the nerve through gentle adjustments, mobility work and targeted exercises, after an exam rules out problems that need other care.
What does sciatica feel like?
Sciatica usually affects one side. People describe it as a sharp, burning or electric pain that runs from the low back or buttock into the back of the thigh, and sometimes below the knee. It can come with tingling, numbness or a heavy feeling in the leg. Sitting, bending or coughing often make it worse.
Common causes
- Disc irritation in the lower back that puts pressure on a nerve root
- Tight hip muscles, including the piriformis, that irritate the nerve in the buttock
- Joint stiffness in the lower back and pelvis
- Long periods of sitting and sudden lifting or twisting
How we approach sciatica
Sciatica care begins with a thorough exam, including movement, strength, reflex and sensation checks. These tell Dr. Thomas where the irritation is likely coming from and whether chiropractic care is appropriate. Care may include gentle adjustments, hip and lower back mobility work, nerve-friendly exercises and guidance on sitting and sleeping positions.
For disc-related sciatica, care may also include non-surgical spinal decompression. If your exam shows signs of significant nerve involvement, Dr. Thomas will refer you for imaging or to a medical provider. Your safety comes first.
Helpful at home
- Keep moving with short, gentle walks.
- Avoid sitting for long stretches. Stand up every 20 to 30 minutes.
- Try the figure-4 stretch and knee-to-chest gently, and stop if leg symptoms increase.
Seek emergency care right away for
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Numbness in the groin or inner thighs
- Sudden or worsening weakness in a leg or foot
- Sciatica on both sides at once
