A chiropractor can help many types of back pain by finding which joints and muscles are not moving well, then using gentle adjustments, mobility work and home exercises to restore movement. Most everyday back pain is mechanical, which means it comes from how your spine, muscles and joints are moving and loading.

What causes back pain?

Most back pain comes from strain on the joints, muscles and ligaments of the spine. Long hours of sitting, lifting with a rounded back, sleeping in an awkward position, sudden twisting and weak core muscles are common triggers. Often there is no single injury. Small loads add up until the back feels stiff, sore or locked up.

Common types of back pain we see include:

  • Lower back pain after sitting, bending or lifting
  • Mid back tightness between the shoulder blades from desk work or driving
  • Morning stiffness that eases as you move
  • Back pain with hip tightness that makes standing up straight uncomfortable

How chiropractic care helps back pain

Chiropractic care for back pain starts with finding the cause. Dr. Thomas looks at how your spine and hips move, where you feel pain and what makes it better or worse. That exam guides your care plan.

Depending on what the exam shows, your care may include:

  • Gentle spinal adjustments to restore motion in stiff joints
  • Mobility and soft tissue work to ease tight muscles
  • Home exercises and stretches that support your progress between visits
  • Spinal decompression for disc-related pain, when appropriate (learn more)
  • Practical advice on lifting, sitting and sleeping positions

Every plan is explained in plain language before treatment begins. If anything in your exam suggests a problem that needs other care, Dr. Thomas will tell you and point you to the right provider.

What to expect at your first back pain visit

Your first visit includes a health history, a physical and spinal exam, and a clear explanation of what Dr. Thomas finds. When care is a good fit, your first gentle adjustment can often happen the same day. Learn more on our new patient page.

FAQ

Back pain questions

Should I see a chiropractor or a doctor for back pain?

For most everyday back pain without warning signs, a chiropractor is a reasonable first visit. If you have red flags such as loss of bladder control, fever, leg weakness or pain after a major injury, see a medical doctor or emergency care first.

How long does it take for back pain to improve?

Many people notice a change within the first few visits, but it depends on how long the pain has been there and what is causing it. Dr. Thomas will give you an honest estimate after your exam.

Is it safe to get adjusted if my back pain is severe?

Dr. Thomas adjusts technique and pressure to your comfort level, and not every visit requires an adjustment. Your exam decides what is appropriate.
