Chiropractic care may help tension-type headaches and headaches that start in the neck, called cervicogenic headaches, by easing joint stiffness and muscle tension in the neck and upper back. A careful exam comes first to make sure your headaches fit this pattern and do not need other medical care.
Which headaches can a chiropractor help?
Chiropractors most often help two types of headaches:
- Tension-type headaches, often felt as a band of pressure around the head, linked to tight neck and shoulder muscles
- Cervicogenic headaches, which start in the neck and spread toward the back of the head, temple or behind the eye, and often change with neck movement
Migraines are a different condition. Some people with migraines also have neck tension that care can address, but migraine management should include your medical doctor.
Common headache triggers we look at
- Long hours at a desk or on a phone with the head pushed forward
- Tight upper back and shoulder muscles from stress
- Poor sleep position or an unsupportive pillow
- Jaw clenching and shallow breathing during busy days
How care works
Dr. Thomas reviews your headache history, checks your neck and upper back motion, and looks for the muscle and joint patterns that match your symptoms. Care may include gentle adjustments, soft tissue work, posture coaching and simple home exercises. You will also learn what to track, so you can see whether headaches are becoming less frequent or less intense.
Because neck tension and headaches often go together, you may also find our neck pain page and posture page helpful.
