Dizziness has many causes, and some need a medical doctor first. Chiropractic care may help when dizziness is linked to stiffness or strain in the neck, often called cervicogenic dizziness. Dr. Thomas starts with a careful history and screening, and refers you promptly when your symptoms point elsewhere.
Vertigo or dizziness: what is the difference?
- Vertigo is a spinning feeling, as if you or the room is moving
- Lightheadedness is feeling faint or woozy, as if you might pass out
- Imbalance is feeling unsteady on your feet
Describing which one you feel, and when it happens, helps narrow down the cause.
Common causes
- Inner ear problems, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a common cause of brief spinning with head movement
- Neck stiffness or injury, including after whiplash
- Migraine-related dizziness
- Blood pressure changes, dehydration or medication side effects
- Less often, conditions of the brain or heart that need urgent care
Where chiropractic care may fit
Some people notice dizziness that comes on with neck movement or after a neck injury, along with neck stiffness or headaches. In these cases, easing joint stiffness and muscle tension in the neck may help. Care may include gentle, low-force adjustments, soft tissue work, posture coaching and simple exercises.
If your exam suggests an inner ear cause or another medical condition, Dr. Thomas will explain your options, which may include a referral to your doctor or a vestibular therapist. See our neck pain page and headaches page for related care.
What to expect at your first visit
You will be asked when the dizziness started, what triggers it, how long it lasts and what other symptoms come with it. Dr. Thomas checks your neck motion, balance and reflexes, and screens for warning signs before any neck care begins. Tell us about any recent neck injury, new severe neck pain or new headache.
